POPULATION growth that is directly proportional to the number of households could raise the risk of fire, says Magelang Regent Zainal Arifin, on Wednesday, May 7, 2014.
Magelang Regency Fire and Disaster Mitigation Agency (hereinafter referred to as Magelang Regency Fire Brigade) data shows fires increase during last five years.
Number of fires rose by 9 between 2012-2013, from 20 to 29.
“It is very difficult to avoid”, said the 38-year-old affectionately known as Ipin, on the sideline of Coordination Meeting of Central Java II Regional Coordination Agency of Indonesia Fire Brigades Association, in Mungkid District, Magelang Regency.
Ipin said that there were only 16 career (civil servant) firefighters employed in Magelang Regency Fire Brigade in 2013 with five fire trucks.
But earlier this year, there will be 18 extra (casual labor) firefighters.
The additional firefighters is considered reasonable, especially when compared with Magelang Regency area of 1,085.73 square kilometers, consists of 21 districts and 372 villages.***
