Good Leaders Motivate Soldiers, Says “Red Beret” Commander

GENERAL Commander (Danjen) of the Indonesian Army’s Special Forces, or Kopassus, Major General Agus Sutomo paid a visit to the Military Academy (Akmil) in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday (June 12, 2014).

General Commander was greeted by Akmil’s Vice Governor Brigadier General Sumedy and several Akmil’s officials. 

General Commander’s visit agenda was to speak in front of 4th grade Akmil’s cadets, giving an explanation of duties and functions of the Kopassus as well as a talk of field leadership.

The Kopassus, also known as the Red Beret, he said, is a managing unit of military’s technical function that is selected, educated and trained, and is given strategic and special military tasks.

“The Kopassus assists Army Commander (Kasad) in fostering functions and operational readiness of special forces”, General Commander said.

Kopassus performs commando operations, the Sandi Yudha intelligence operations, and terrorism prevention, he said.

He also urged Kopassus members to become soldiers of honesty and responsibility, who acted nobly and with esprit de corps.

“Let’s keep guard with genuineness and maintain the honor of the Red Beret. Our existence gives positive values to the people and the nation. One assertion represents our principle: an righteous loyalty”, he said.

When talking about leadership, General Commander said that a leader motivates soldiers both inside and outside the chain of command to pursue actions, focus thinking, and shape decisions for the greater good of the organization.

“Soldiers will follow a good leader anywhere and under any conditions of battle. While many factors decide the outcomes of battles, leadership is often the most important”, he said.

On the sidelines of the Kopassus General Commander visit, Brigadier General Sumedy said: “This is unquestionably important discourse for 4th grade cadets as they will soon start their duties as military leaders gradually.”***
