Unemployment and Labor Force in Magelang Regency and Municipality

THE OPEN unemployment rate in Magelang Regency, according to BPS (the Central Statistics Agency) has risen to 6.22 percent by August 2013, compared to 4.47 percent in 2012 and 5.98 percent in 2011.

In Magelang Municipality, the open unemployment rate decreased to 6.80 percent in August of 2013, from 8.71 percent in 2012 and 8.28 percent in 2011.

The open unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of the total labor force that is unemployed of every 100 labor force.

Meanwhile, the labor force participation rate in Magelang Regency fell to 70.35 percent in August of 2013 from 74.52 percent in 2012 and 71.52 percent in 2011.

Magelang Municipality has also experienced the same thing, where the labor force participation rate has dropped from 69.46 percent in 2012 and 70.60 percent in 2011 to 68.93 percent in 2013.

The labor force participation rate is the ratio of labor force to the working age population. The rate is calculated by the amount of the labor force divided by the population aged 15 years and over, and multiplied by 100.

The 2012 census figures show that Magelang Regency has become home to 1.3 million people. Around 65.13 percent of the population are classified as labor force (aged 15 years and older), and 63.22 percent of the labor force are already employed.

The BPS has also revealed that a considerable part of the labor force in Magelang Regency, 34.93 percent, received only SD (primary school) education.

In 2012, Magelang Municipality had a population of nearly 120 thousand consisted of 45.612 people of labor force, slightly higher than in the previous year (45.028).***[alwaysmagelang@gmail.com]
